Conflict and Fiction

Q Directions: After reading the article and listening to the video on tension and conflict in this module, take several minutes to gather your thoughts about conflict. When have you been able to identify with a conflict in a story or movie based on your lived experiences? Each of the stories we have read this week may convey more than one form of conflict for the protagonist, the main character. How many conflicts could you identify. How does the tension suggest the conflicts? What to Do: First, once you have gathered your thoughts, write a 300 word initial post explaining how you understand the relationship between tension and conflict and why conflict is important in fiction. Use examples form the stories to explain your thoughts and identify at least two different kinds of conflict you became aware of while analyzing the stories. Please remember not to post any any abusive conflicts that you or anyone else you know experienced as a minor. I am a mandated reporter, which means I have to inform law enforcement authorities if you do reveal any form of abuse or neglect to anyone under 18 no matter how long ago the abuse took place. Second, continue the conversation by engaging with at least two other students with 150 word (minimum) replies to their comments. Your initial post is due by 11:59pm Wednesday, February 16 and your replies by 11:59pm Friday, February 18. Please see the rubric (link in upper right corner) to understand the grading for discussions. This topic was locked 18 Feb at 23:59.

As the assigned lecture states, tension is the mother of fiction, issues are the mother of tension. In fiction, these issues are referred to as conflict. More specifically, conflict refers to a frustrated, jeopardized, or competing goal. It's when a character desires something but something else comes in the way. According to what I have learned while tension simmers beneath the surface, conflict is more often than not out in the open and could be termed as tension when it is realized turns into conflict.
