Q Instructions Background Throughout the course, you will keep a communication journal to reflect on how you’re communicating in daily life, personally and professionally, and how it impacts your self representation. You will be able to dissect specific communication concepts through these real-life reflection opportunities. In this journal entry, you will be asked to record three interactions and compare/contrast them, specifically focusing on the situation, type of communication, intended message, and receiver/listener. This will help you determine, using your exploration of some basic communication concepts, whether or not you could have approached these communication situations differently. Steps To complete the assignment, do the following: • Observe and record three different interactions. This could be at home, a local cafe, in your local neighborhood, at a store, or any other environment you frequent. Answer the following: o Who is the sender? o What is the message? o Who is the receiver? o Does the receiver appear to be listening? o Is the message received as intended, or is a miscommunication taking place? Why or why not? • Compare/Contrast the three interactions. Consider the following: o What was the setting and context for the communication? o Who was involved in the communication? o What were the expectations of the communicators (consider their different backgrounds and worldviews)? o What types of noise were taking place? (You may only be able to observe external noise, but see if you notice any internal noise on the part of the communicators.) • What other skills/elements did you notice? Refer to Elements of the Communication Process regarding the elements of the communication process, and then consider the following: o What specific skills did you observe? What skills were missing? o How were the elements of communication used appropriately or inappropriately? o What would you have done differently, if you were part of this communication? If you’re having difficulty observing these communications in real time, then search on Google, YouTube, or other sites to observe interactions and record your observations. Try to observe in the real world, though, as this will give you the best insights for this activity. Your journal entry should be two to three pages, double-spaced, and in 12-point Times New Roman font.
