This chapter looks at the learning and cultural transmission theories of crime in sociology. These theories assume that criminal acts are like any human behavior in that they are brought about due to socialization. Thus, criminal behavior is assumed not to be an inborn human characteristic. ? In the learning theory, it is assumed that criminal behavior is learnt through observation, whether this is through interactions with role-models or the group the individual is a part of. Especially youth may grow up seeing domestic and other types of violence and crime and start to accept this as normal. They may think that this is the way to earn money or treat others. Differential association theory and social learning theory are two learning theories that are covered in the book
