In terms of rhythm both these songs have a similar beat but they mainly differ in terms of tempo. While the Bossa Nova has a more relaxed and laid back beat to it the Salsa piece presents an upbeat tempo or pace that compliments the dance form often associated with it. The emphasis on instruments remains heavier on the Salsa while emphasis on vocals is higher in the Bossa Nova. Both Carlos Jobim and Ellis Regina complimented each other’s vocals by alternating verses in between them. Whereas in the Salsa – Poncho Sanchez maintains a upbeat tempo that seamlessly transitions into the alternating singers without noticeable changes in the verse. I prefer the Salsa by Poncho Sanchez, mainly due to its upbeat nature and greater emphasis on the musicality of the piece.
