Australopithecines are mainly represented by the fossils of more than 10 species. While some species represent the lineage of ancestors and descendants. There are robusticity and size variations in the members of the species. The species range from the gracile and small to the robust and large species. Mostly, the species have large premolars, small canines, small brains, and large molars. The modern australopithecines have large teeth, jaw, and face. Australopithecus anamensis which is the oldest australopithecine species has the same physical features as the Ardipithecus. It indicates that they have an ancestral-descendant lineage relationship with the two genres.
