Assignment Module 8

Q I have several different activities I want you to complete described below. If there is a deliverable, then upload that to this assignment dropbox. This MUST be done as a small group together----do NOT divide and conquer as this is not the best way to promote your learning. ASSIGNMENT #1 1. Watch the Incentive Spirometer Video together and teach each other as if you were the nurse teaching a patient. Also look at guidelines for nursing care 39-1 on page 1504 of your book and review with your small group. Remember we don't want our patients to get so tired doing this that they don't take deep breaths. What's the goal of incentive spirometry? ASSIGNMENT #2 2. Complete the questions below regarding concepts surrounding breathing and the environment (think health promotion) • o GROUPS 1-5: o Noticing (recognizing cues) ? What variables in the local environment (at home, at work, and in general) should the nurse identify as predisposing individuals to respiratory and cardiovascular dysfunction? ? What are other variables that affect respiratory function? ? Describe one diagnostic procedure related to respiratory function. What things does a nurse need to consider before, during and after the procedure? o GROUPS 1-5: o Interpreting (analyzing cues and prioritizing hypotheses) • o ? What are some potential nursing diagnoses related to respiratory complications? ? Why did you choose those nursing diagnoses? o GROUPS 6-9: o Responding (Generating Solutions and Taking Actions) • o ? What can nurses do individually and collectively to promote pollution-free environments and minimize negative factors? ? How else would nurses promote clients’ respiratory function? • o ? Describe some teaching associated with health promotion of the respiratory system. ? Who might the nurse collaborate with for a patient with altered respiratory function? o GROUPS 6-9: o Evaluating (Evaluating Outcomes): • o ? How will the nurse evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving client’s respiratory function? ? What evidence will support the conclusion that the interventions were effective? ? Evaluate your own thought processes during this exercise. ASSIGNMENT #3 3. Remember we want effective breathing to best oxygenate our tissues. Main respiratory goals: clear airways, open/expandable lungs, and a respiratory rate that is conducive to bringing in enough oxygen. Discuss and answer the following questions GROUPS 1-5: • What are different ways we can respond to help clients get rid of secretions? • Why do secretions cause dyspnea? GROUPS 6-9: • What are different ways we can respond to help clients open up their lungs and keep them open? • Why do people with respiratory issues have difficulty eating well? How does this affect their nutrition status? • What can we do to improve nutrition in persons with severe respiratory compromise? ASSIGNMENT #4 4. Complete this mini case study together and answer the subsequent questions • You are caring for a 70 year old male weighing 375 lbs who recently retired from a paint chemical plant and was brought into the hospital after suffering a neck injury (located at C4--cervical vertebra #4) and head trauma related to a MVA (motor vehicle accident). He also suffered 2 broken legs. Client has a 40 year history of smoking and was recently diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. His physician has scheduled surgery for vertebral repair and surgical repair of leg fractures (he will have to undergo anesthesia and will have pain medication ordered). • GROUPS 1-3: Q's 1-4 • GROUPS 4-6: Q's 5-8 • GROUPS 7-9: Q's 9-11 1. What client data did you notice that suggests he is at risk for respiratory issues? (Note----each sentence within the case study has at least one risk factor for respiratory compromise) 2. What is the #1 cause of respiratory compromise in adults? 3. If this client is not able to clear secretions from his lungs, what potential complications do you predict? 4. How will you manage these potential complications? 5. If this client needed nasopharyngeal suctioning, how would you perform this? What nursing considerations are needed during this procedure? Provide rationale 6. If this client needed chest physiotherapy, what nursing considerations are needed? 7. How would you know if this client had adequate tissue perfusion in his feet? 8. What are some causes of poor tissue perfusion in general? For this specific client? 9. What potential complications do you predict for this client if he had poor tissue perfusion to the feet? 10. How can a nurse manage potential complications associated with poor tissue perfusion? 11. Let's say this client developed a pleural effusion and needed a thoracentesis. What potential complications would the nurse be monitoring for?
