Q Below is a scenario In this scenario my wife plays the character System 1 and I play the character System 2. In January of 2013 during my Christmas break, System 2 was laying on the couch --- t.v. remote in hand, bag of Lay’s potato chip curled up in my arm, and half asleep as I watched football. I was startled fully awake when System 1 slammed down the phone and yelled, “that’s it, I’m cutting him off.” My wife owns a s mall manufacturing company of durable medical equipment....think wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc. Her company manufacturers the product and then sells it to distributors. Upon purchasing the product, the distributor has 30 days to pay for it which is stan dard industry practice. These distributors double the price and then sell it to the end user. One of her distributors is a company called Spectra Medical Services (not real name which has been changed to protect the innocent). For six years, Spectra had been a fairly good customer for System 1 --- often paying late but ultimately Spectra eventually paid their bill. O n this January day, Spectra was past due on $14,000 of product they purchased in November. This amount was larger than the typica l $1.500 - $2,500 balance that Spectra would owe. When System 1 had asked to get paid, Spectra indicated that they would not have the ability to pay the past due sum at which time System 1 slammed down the phone. If you recall from our notes on System 1 vs System 2 , you know that System 2 has final say in decisions. Despite carrying the trump card, System 2 very seldom plays the card because it is lazy and enjoys laying on the couch. It recognizes many mistakes that System 1 makes but usually just lets them pass. On this day, System 2 hears System 1 slam down the phone and yell, “that’s it, I’m cutting him off.” Put your self into the role of System 2 and answer the following questions: 1. As System 2 would you get off the couch and over - rule System 1? Why or why not? What did you hear/observe that led to your decision? (1 pt) 2. How would you handle this problem? (2 pts) 3. If you were the owner of the manufacturing company, what would be your objective given this scenario? (2 pts)
