Week 7 Lab Conversation

Q General Guidance: You should read through this week's assigned lab and/or Peerceptiv material before you make your post, so that your post will be informed, and you avoid posing a question that is answered in the course materials. General Format: You are required to make ONE post to each week’s lab discussion board. Your required post must contain 50 words at minimum and be written in your own words. Your grade will be determined by your demonstration of three areas of communication: application, critical thinking, and writing. Deadline: Your required post is due by 11:59PM, Wednesday. Late posts will be penalized 0.5 points (20%) per day late. NOTE: We recommend that you avoid using the smartphone/tablet Canvas app when submitting your discussion post, because the app frequently fails to associate posts with your corresponding discussion group. ________________________________________ This Week's Posting Prompt: Address at least ONE of the following prompts, pose a related question, or respond to a classmate's post. 1. We will be looking at several different reflexes in the week 6 part 2 lab. Pick one of the following reflexes, briefly state which specific nerves or portions of the nervous system they test. This may take additional research. 1. A. Patellar Reflex B. Calcaneal Reflex C. Plantar Reflex D. Biceps Reflex E. Triceps Reflex 2. Why do vegetarians need to pay a little closer attention to their diets to ensure that they are obtaining essential nutrients than omnivores do? 3. On January 12, 2007, a 28 year-old California woman died tragically in her home 2 hours after competing in the “Hold your Wee for a Wii” water drinking contest that was put on by a local radio station. In order to earn second place in the contest, she drank 7.5 liters (nearly 2 gallons) of water over a three hour period. The woman was 6 feet tall and approximately 150 pounds, which would make her body’s normal water content approximately 34 liters. This means that she increased her total body water content by 22% in only 3 hours. On audio from the radio show while she was continuing to drink water, she can be heard complaining that her head hurt. The coroner stated that the circumstances surrounding her death were consistent with “Water intoxication.” Based on what you know about osmosis and diffusion and water balance, what do you think exactly killed this woman?

Protein is a vital nutrient for human survival, and amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Essential and non-essential amino acids are two types of amino acids that can be found in nature. The essential amino acids are a set of amino acids that must be obtained from outside the body and are not synthesized by it. It has been observed that the main sources of the essential amino acid include meat and eggs. Since vegetarians only include leafy vegetables, pulses, nuts, and seeds, there are chances that these individuals may lack certain amino acids and suffer from deficiency disease.
