Natural Science Module 2 Discussion 1

Q For the final project in this course, you will conduct a research study looking at the interaction of multiple variables in an experimental situation you construct in the online lab for Island Biogeography. You will need to be careful in constructing your research to avoid many of the elements that can make results questionable. The online virtual lab is basically a closed system in a controlled environment, meaning that you will have a limited number of variables to manipulate without having to worry about noise or interference from external factors. You should design your research to maximize the strength afforded in the online lab, which can help you to make your research results more valuable and reliable. It is important to recall that drawing conclusions without adequate evidence to support them is a common pitfall in scientific research articles. You should plan your time in the course to avoid this by conducting your research early and several times over the next few modules. The work you do in this discussion will assist you in mastering the Module 2 Outcome #1, which is Course Outcome #2. Instructions Follow the listed steps to complete this discussion activity. Read Muedin’s Leyla Weighs in (Links to an external site.) (2015), and Ioannidis’ Why most published research findings are false (Links to an external site.) (2005). View YouTube videos on “Is most published research wrong? (Links to an external site.)” and “Why most published research findings are false (Links to an external site.).” Visit and review the go-labs Island Biogeography virtual laboratory (Links to an external site.), and become familiar with it to address this discussion question adequately. In addition, you can begin to organize your work on the lab for M2A2. Then, in your initial post, fully respond to the following prompt: Identify at least 2 important elements identified by the authors in the module learning materials and your own research which can lead to incorrect or misleading results drawn from the data collected. What steps can you take to prevent issues such as these you have identified from happening with your research? We are limited with the parameters of the online lab itself, we are limited by time to conduct the research and the variables we can control as well as the variables that cannot be controlled. How will you address, overcome or acknowledge these elements in your examination of the results you collect?

In biological and social research the research is mainly based on the significance of research and the statistical research and its significance is mainly based on the normal distribution and the bell shaped curve. Generally, a research result the null hypothesis is tested and at the Normal distribution curve there are several points of standard distribution that act as points of significance. The standard deviation is a point which leads to the different conceptual understandings where we see that if the Null Hypothesis is true 5% of times, then the 95% of times it is false. If the null hypothesis is true less than 5% of times, then the research results can be considered as true 95% of times (Ioannidis, 2005).
